K-12 COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

The ARL/ALC K-12 Outreach Program (AAKOP) is administered by the Army Research Laboratory in Adelphi, MD provides an opportunity for youth and community affiliates of the Washington, D. C. Metropolitan Area to explore Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) subjects and careers through enriching educational programs and activities at the laboratory, local schools, and during community events. The program utilizes a multi-disciplinary educational approach with age and grade-appropriate curriculum and activities to invite participants to learn more about Army research initiatives. Students team with devoted scientists and engineers to learn about innovative use oftechnology for soldiers in the field. AAKOP activities are offered throughout the year.

Program Objectives

  • Increase the presence of the ARL/ALC K-12 Outreach Program in local school districts
  • Increase the presence of the ARL/ALC K-12 Outreach Program at community events to promote Army STEM education
  • Inspire students to excel in STEM subjects
  • Collaborate with local schools and professional associations to develop partnerships that foster STEM programs and activities

Eligibility Requirements
The Army Research Laboratory (ARL) partners with local youth and community affiliates of the Washington, DC Metropolitan Area. Professional organizations, local businesses, and local school districts are invited to participate.

K-12 TUTORING PROGRAM

The Adelphi Laboratory Center Tutoring Program (ALCTP) is hosted by the Army Research Laboratory (ARL) in Adelphi, Maryland. The tutoring program offers academic assistance to elementary, middle, and high school students for Science, Engineering, and Math (STEM) subjects. Students work with dedicated scientists and engineers to strengthen their academic skills. The program assists students with identifying academic strengths and weaknesses in order to develop quality study habits and proficient academic skills as life-long learners and achievers. ALCTP is offered during the spring semester for 10-12 weeks in designated local schools.

Program Goals

  • Provide weekly tutoring services to underrepresented/underserved students
  • Encourage students to become proficient in STEM subjects
  • Increase studentsâ€?awareness of STEM careers
  • Extend ARL’s presence in the community

Eligibility

  • Students must be currently enrolled in a local public school in the Washington, DC Metropolitan Area.
  • Students must be identified by a participating school staff member. Parental consent is required.

Program Specifics
The ARL/ALC Tutoring Program is a 10-12 week in-school academic program. The school program coordinator and the ARL coordinator agree upon the time and duration of the program. Students are able to participate during the academic school day.

The Adelphi Laboratory Center Tutoring Program, sponsored by the Army Research Laboratory, are located in Prince George’s County Public Schools.
A LIST OF LOCATIONS WILL BE AVAILABLE FEBRUARY 2016!

How to sign-up: Teachers will nominate students and complete a Tutoring Referral Sheet. Students and parents will be notified about acceptance into the tutoring program. Parental consent is required. Time and dates are site specific.
ALCTP REFFERALS WILL BE ACCEPTED BEGINNING JANUARY 2016!
